At I/O, Google launches Android Wear, says Moto360 coming this summer
Google's wearable platform comes to market, LG G Watch ready for order today.
SAN FRANCISCO—While*the Android Wear emulator has been out for months, Google said today at its I/O conference that the OS and hardware are*now ready for consumers. Google is jumping into the wider wearables market with an Android-based OS designed for smartwatches and other wearables. Just like Android for phones and tablets, Android Wear is an OS that depends on OEMs to adopt and ship on their devices.
Android Wear is primarily driven by voice*commands and Google Now, which pops up cards it thinks would be useful on the home screen. Google's trademark "OK Google" hotword detection is here, and voice commands query Google and work the same way they do on Glass or Android. Android Wear's big leg-up on the competition*is that it*seamlessly works with every Android app, and unlike Samsung devices, Wear is compatible with any Android phone running 4.3 and above. Out of the box, all*Android notifications show up on the watch, including all of the notification buttons.
Developers who*want to integrate more with Android Wear can add "reply" code to their app, which will let Android Wear users send transcribed speech to the app (tweet by voice,*for instance) or pick from a list of canned responses. It is also possible to make native Android Wear apps, which run activities directly on the watch and which allow developers to do things like make a custom layout or display real-time information from sensors. Android Wear will support both square and circular watch faces.
A consumer launch means that hardware is here, and first out of the gate are the LG G Watch, the Samsung Gear Live,*and the Moto 360. The G Watch is a*square device that comes in black and white and is water and dust resistant. It has an always-on screen and a metal body, and it charges via a USB plug on the left side. In a demo onstage, Google's Engineering Director David Singleton showed horizontal and vertical scrolling on the G Watch, as well as location-aware notifications.
To upload apps on the watch, users can*download an app from Google Play, and if a watch is connected to your phone, the app will update on the watch automatically.
The Moto360 was the star of the show. Thanks to its round LCD and jewelry-like appearance, it looks like a normal watch. Google didn't say much about it, but it will be available later this summer.
