Huawei unveils MediaPad X1 - the lightest 7" tablet doubles as a phone, has huge 5000 mAh battery

Huawei used its MWC presence to announce the MediaPad X1, which it claims is the "lightest and narrowest 7-inch tablet". At 239g of weight, and 103.9mm width, we'd say Huawei has nailed the dimensions, as these numbers are better than the chief rivals like the Nexus 7, or the Kindle Fire HDX 7.

On top of that, Huawei made the tablet just 7.18 mm thin, too, so you can hardly ask for a lighter, more compact aluminum slate than this. The company did all that slimming down with a purpose, as the MediaPad X1 sports LTE Cat4 connectivity, and you can also use the tablet as a phone. The IPS-LCD display sports the hearty 1200 x 1920 pixels of resolution, as all high-end 7-inchers do, but the screen occupies the whopping 80% of the tablet's front, making it the slate with the best screen-to-body ratio.

Computing power is provided by a 1.6 GHz quad-core processor of Huawei's own 28nm HiSilicon Kirin 910 variety, which supports LTE connectivity. The whole impressive setup is backed by a huge 5000 mAh battery, which reportedly delivers 21 days on standby, and "up to 5 days of continuous use". That's not all, as Huawei also equipped the MediaPad X1 with a 13 MP camera on the back that sports a Sony-made Exmor R sensor, as well as a 5 MP front-facing shooter.

The only downer here is the somewhat older Android 4.2 Jelly Bean version, as well as the fact that it will be available in select regions only, such as China, Russia, Western Europe, the Middle East, Japan and Latin America. We won't be waiting much for a full review of the world's lightest 7-incher, as the aluminum-clad slate will hit shelves starting next month.
