Possible specs of what could end up being the HTC U Play 2 have popped up online, giving us a fair understanding of what the device might be like.

The handset is rolling under the X2-HT model number on Geekbench, revealing an upper mid-range 2.2GHz Snapdragon 660 chipset on board, which would be an improvement over the Helio P10 found inside the HTC U Play. There's also 4GB of RAM, which would be an improvement over the 3GB found in the first HTC U Play and would definitely help the eventual successor better compete with its rivals in the upper mid-range space.

Finally and most importantly, there's Android 8.0 on board, which should be the standard for all devices launching from now on, though Geekbench doesn't elaborate if the OS is a stock endeavor or running HTC Sense on top. As a reminder, HTC has already delved into Android One territory with the HTC U Life which is running vanilla Android, hence it's not impossible for the X2-HT to be running an untouched version of Android. However, nothing can be said for sure at this point.

Given that the HTC U Play was launched in late Q1 2017, the X2-HT seems like an awfully convenient candidate for a possible successor. There's always the chance that HTC might launch this one at CES 2018 in Las Vegas, though a safer presumption would probably be an MWC 2018 announcement. As we know more, so will you.
