Although Huawei’s main focus continues to be shipping smartphones under its own brand name, the company does also operate a sub-brand called Honor which often repackages certain Huawei devices at lower prices. If recent leaks are accurate, the brand’s next smartphone may be the Honor 8X, but it looks suspiciously like Huawei’s upcoming Mate 20 and Mate 20 Pro.

Thanks to multiple photos that show the device in use on a bus, it’s been confirmed once again that the Honor 8X will adopt a mostly bezel-less display complete with a slight chin down below and a tiny waterdrop notch up top that’s just big enough to house the front-facing camera. This coincides perfectly with the design language that Huawei’s Mate 20 series will adopt from the front. However, on the rear, it’s clear that the Honor 8X will not be competing in the same price range. After all, while not clearly visible in these images, a recent certification posting did showcase a vertical dual-camera setup on the rear, rather than a triple-camera layout in the center of the panel much like the one included on Huawei’s upcoming Mate 20 line. Nevertheless, the rear-facing fingerprint will still be present.

At this point in time, it’s unclear if the Honor 8X will be based closely on either the Mate 20 or Mate 20 Pro. Due to the large 7.1-inch display that is reportedly present, though, it seems a bit unlikely – the Mate 20 is expected to ship with a 6.3-inch display, while the Pro model will up this to 6.9-inches – however, it’s certainly not impossible. What does seem more plausible, though, is that the smaller notch will be part of the both Huawei and Honor’s design language moving forward.

For now, only time will tell if the new front panel look will make its way to multiple other smartphones too. But if the design is met with praise upon the release of either the Honor 8X or Huawei’s Mate 20 line, it certainly wouldn’t be surprising.
