Google has yet to announce when Android L will be officially introduced, but there’s a high chance that an event will be scheduled sometime this month. Along with Android L, Google is expected to launch its next Nexus flagship smartphone.

Up until now, we’ve been overwhelmed by the amount of information about the so-called Nexus 6 that’s been leaking online in the last couple of weeks.

There’s been quite a debate whether or not Google will launch two Nexus 6 models with different size display, but we still don’t have any confirmations that would clear things up yet.

Initially leaked as a 5.2-inch smartphone, the Nexus 6 is now rumored to pack a 5.9-inch display. What’s clear is that the next Nexus device will be manufactured by Motorola.

Internally known as Motorola Shamu, the 5.9-inch smartphone will be released on the market as Nexus 6 or Nexus X. According to TKTechNews, Google is now trying to license the Nexus 6 name, but for the time being, there’s no telling they had any success.

Google had some issues back in 2010 when it launched the Nexus One. The company received a cease-and-desist letter from Isa Dick Hackett, owner of sci-fi author Philip K. Dick that implies the name Nexus One is a direct reference to the “Nexus-6” model series of androids that appears in the “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?” (known as Blade Runner).

At that time things did not escalate, but the Nexus 6 name would probably be a much better reference to Philip K. Dick’s novel, so Google is probably looking to make a deal with the owner of the author’s intellectual properties.

The Nexus 6 will be exclusive to Verizon as Motorola Moto S

That aside, the same source claims that there were two Nexus devices slated for release this year, a 5.9- and a 5.2-inch device. However, it appears that Motorola plans to cut one or find another use for it and as we’ve seen in the last couple of days the US-based company seems to have nixed the smaller version.

Now that doesn’t necessarily means that a smaller Nexus 6 is out of the question, it’s just that Google may launch it as a Google Play Edition or the 5.2-inch Motorola may be part of the Android Silver lineup.

On the other hand, the larger version is likely to be available in the US as Motorola S. The smartphone will be exclusive to Verizon Wireless for about two months, after which it will arrive at AT&T. Obviously, it should go on sale at Google Play Store as well.
