Google's Android One project in India hasn't been that successful at all due to the fact that local OEMs and the search giant did not have a solid market strategy.

Many customers in India probably know by now that Android One smartphones manufactured by Micromax, Spice and Karbonn were only available for purchase online.

The absence of Android One smartphones from brick and mortar retail channels has taken a heavy toll on their sales. But that's about to change if we are to believe the recent report coming from Economic Times.

In an initial statement for the cited source, Caesar Sengupta, vice president of product management, said that Google “learnt a lot from the initial round with our partners and they have learnt in terms of device availability, in channel and others.

“Initially, when we had launched, people couldn't buy them in all channels... In our future (launches) with our partners, we want to make sure that we're truly available everywhere.”

It looks like Google and Indian handset manufacturer Lava International have decided to launch another Android One smartphone on July 14.

The device will cost twice the price of the first Android smartphones still available in India (Rs 12,000 / $190 / €170), but it will also come with enhanced hardware configuration.
MediaTek chipset accompanied by 2GB RAM

While we don't know the name of the device, the report claims the Lava smartphone will be powered by a MediaTek processor and 2GB of RAM.

In addition, the smartphone will sport a 5-inch display and it will ship with Android 5.1 Lollipop operating system right out of the box.

Lava's Android One smartphone will benefit from frequent software and security updates, which will make it standout from other handsets in the same price range.

Last but not least, it appears that Google has learned its lesson and the next Android One smartphones will be available for purchase online but also in retail stores.
