Google Assistant will read stories from the Google News app on your Android phone

Back in May, during Google I/O, the company unveiled a new AI-powered News app designed to present news stories from all angles. But suppose you get the urge to hear the latest top stories and your eyes and hands are otherwise occupied? Google has announced that it started rolling out a new feature that will allow you to ask Assistant on your Android phone, "Hey Google, what's the latest news?" Your handset will play some news excepts directly from the Google News app, culled from various media companies. You can even be more specific and ask for "the latest news about NASA," or "the latest news about Giancarlo Stanton." This will also work on your Google Home smart speakers.

On Smart Display devices, such as the recently released pair from Lenovo, you can view video or audio headlines about News, Sports, Politics and other topics. Choose your news sources from hundreds of options including CNN and CNBC. If you ask about a specific topic, recommended videos from YouTube, related to that topic, will show up on the screen.

These features are on the way to Android devices, smart speakers and Smart Display units with Google Assistant enabled. Google also plans on offering this on Android Auto and on headphones that offer Google Assistant, such as Google Pixel Buds.

That's a pretty cool feature. Still not worth the spying, but I read the google news multiple times a day.
