Samsung's Exynos 9820 to come with tri-cluster, 2+2+4 CPU
Even though MediaTek dropped the triple core configuration setup on its chipsets, Samsung seems keen to give it a try. The latest rumor going around by leakster Ice Universe claims that the next in-house made Exynos 9820 will incorporate two of the custom Mongoose M4 cores accompanied by two sets of unmodified ARM cores. The three clusters will be able to work in every possible configuration thanks to ARM's DynamIQ architecture.
The 2+2+4 core configuration stands for 2x Mongoose M4 cores, 2x high-performance Cortex-A76 or Cortex-A75 cores and 4x low-power and efficient Cortex-A55 cores. Clock speeds are still unknown, but given the fact that the Exynos 9820 is a flagship SoC it will probably use the newer Cortex-A76 cores, which can theoretically reach 3.30GHz. That's, of course, according to ARM and real-life implementations might be more conservative.
In any case, we suggest you remain skeptical of this information because if Samsung's Mongoose M4 really is superior to ARM's latest Cortex-A76 high-performance CPU cores, we don't see why Samsung would go for a tri-cluster CPU design instead of sticking to just two clusters - Mongoose M4 + Cortex-A55 for power savings.
