Facebook's new Messenger app brings filters to the holidays
Want more filters for your photos? Facebook Messenger now has you covered.
As part of a new update to its popular messaging app, Facebook is bringing masks, effects, stickers and filters with a revamped "Messenger Camera." As part of the update to the current Messenger app, which will start rolling out today to users around the world, Facebook is making the camera a more integral part of the app's experience.
Similar to Snapchat and Instagram, a new shutter button will be placed in the middle of the bottom tabs on the apps main menu, giving users easy and quick access to start taking photos. Facebook says pictures and other forms of non-text messaging have become increasingly popular on the platform, with more than 2.5 billion emojis, photos, stickers and videos sent every day.
As with other platforms, a single tap on the shutter button takes a picture, while a longer press will start recording video. Stickers, masks, effects and filters will all be available to liven up your selfies, with the social networking giant saying it has partnered with artists from around the world to help create some of the "thousands" of options it has on hand.
And just in time for the holidays, Facebook says special holiday effects will be coming as well.
You can then, of course, send the message out to one of your groups or individual friends on Messenger, however unlike Instagram Direct or Snapchat, the pictures won't automatically delete themselves after viewing.
The update is very similar to MSQRD, a live filter and face swapping app that Facebook purchased earlier this year as part of its ongoing attempt to keep millennials on its platform. MSQRD (pronounced 'masquerade') was recently included on Apple's list of the ten best apps of the year.
