Yesterday, Apple apologized for throttling the CPU on models like the Apple iPhone 6 or later. After numerous models shutdown last year, unable to complete complex tasks, Apple deduced that the problem was the lack of power remaining in the older batteries inside these units. So iOS 10.2.1 was pushed out, designed to use power management (code for throttling) to slow down the CPU. This would prevent the affected iPhone from shutting down.

In its apology, which was posted on the Apple website, the company said that one of the steps it is taking to regain the trust of iPhone users is to reduce the price of a battery replacement for certain models. Those with an iPhone 6 or later can have the battery replaced on their phone for $29. That is a $50 or 63% price cut from the $79 that Apple was charging. Replacing the battery means that your phone won't be in risk of getting shut down because of a weaker cell in your handset.

If you don't feel like having to go out and wait on line at the nearest Apple Store, or if you aren't close to one of the 499 locations, there is an alternative. You can pick up a DIY (Do It Yourself) kit from iFixit. The company has cut the price for several of its kits down to $29. And while Apple's $29 deal only covers the iPhone 6 and later, iFixit has kits for the Apple iPhone 4s, Apple iPhone 5, Apple iPhone 5s and Apple iPhone 5c in additional to the other units. Some of these are priced as low as $16.99.
