Did you know what was the largest and heaviest cell phone ever built?

Remember the days when having the smallest cell phone was all the rage? We sure do. Things have definitely changed since then, and the trend seems to have shifted in the opposite direction. The largest cell phone, however, is not some kind of a phablet with a gargantuan display. It isn't a cell phone made to be built into those luxury saloon cars either. It is this one-of-a-kind, scaled-up version of the Samsung SCH-r450 for Cricket Wireless, also known as the Samsung Messenger.

Clearly, this phone was not something you'd call "mobile". Presented in Chicago on March 11, 2009, the gargantuan gadget was 15 feet wide, 11.2 feet tall, and 2.5 feet thick (4.57 by 3.42 by 0.74 meters). The LED display alone had a diagonal size of 7.46 feet (2.27 meters) and weighed 350 pounds (158.8 kg). Instead of plastic, the contraption's shell was built mostly of wood and metal.

And yes, the phone worked, as you can see in the video below. It could be used for making calls, for sending text messages, and for most other operations that could be performed with a regular-sized Samsung Messenger. The phone was on display for several days in Chicago, where anyone could go and give it a try.
