Android Pay Can Now Be Used For In-App Purchases

Google’s mobile payments service Android Pay was launched earlier this year in the fall, at that time it was not possible to use the payments service for in-app purchases, but that functionality has finally been added to the service today. Android Pay can already be used to make payments at more than one million locations across the country where tap and pay method is accepted with more locations being added every day.

Starting today users in the United States can use Android Pay to make in-app payments. This means that users no longer have to pull out their credit cards to manually punch in information. Supported apps will have an Android Pay button, just tap on it and confirm the payment.

The method of processing in-app payments is similar to how Android Pay processes payments at physical merchants, it doesn’t share card details, so users can take advantage of this new feature without having to worry about their card details being shared.

For now it’s possible to make in-app payments in apps like OpenTable, Hotel Tonight and Lyft. Over the next few months more apps will be added, developers who are interested in supporting this payment method in their apps can visit the Android Pay API developer site to find out more.

Google has also confirmed today that it’s taking the first step in international expansion of Android Pay, revealing that Android Pay will be released in Australia by the first half of next year, with more countries being eventually added to the list.
